Cardiovascular health check invitations

What the practice is offering

Your GP practice is taking part in a Scottish Government initiative to help prevent heart and circulation problems (cardiovascular disease, or CVD).

Some patients are being invited for a free health check to identify early signs of risk and help prevent future illness.

Why this matters

Cardiovascular disease is a major health issue in Scotland:

  • It is the second largest cause of overall disease burden
  • It is the second most common cause of death after cancer
  • It accounts for 25% of all deaths in Scotland
  • There were 4,478 avoidable deaths under age 75

Many people are unaware they are at risk:

  • Around 1.3 million people in Scotland have high blood pressure
  • Only 24% are treated and controlled
  • Around 1 in 3 adults are recorded as having high blood pressure

Why you have been invited

You may be invited if you:

  • Are aged 35–60
  • Do not already have heart or circulation disease
  • Have not had a full set of checks recently

Why it’s important to attend

Many people decline invitations because they feel fit and healthy. However:

  • Conditions like high blood pressure and cholesterol often have no symptoms
  • You may feel well but still be at risk

Also:

  • Some risks are outwith your control, such as family history
  • A simple check can pick up problems early
  • Early advice or treatment can help prevent heart attack or stroke

What the health check involves

If you are invited, the check is simple and quick, and may include:

  • Blood pressure check
  • Cholesterol blood test
  • Weight and BMI
  • Blood sugar test (if needed to assess diabetes risk)
  • Questions about smoking and lifestyle

Simple message for patients

You may feel completely healthy, but it is still worth having a quick health check.

It can:

  • Reassure you everything is fine, or
  • Help you take early steps to protect your health

It’s better to check and know than assume.
