Drugs and alcohol referral

Community action team (CAT) East Renfrewshire

These teams bring specialist nursing and social work staff together to provide comprehensive, local and accessible community based services for people with drug and alcohol problems. Community addiction teams are the first point of contact for people with drug and alcohol problems and can refer individuals onto other services including hospital based services for people who require inpatient care, residential facilities for people undergoing rehabilitation and community projects which offer a range of training and employment opportunities.

They carry out a comprehensive joint assessment of an individual’s health and social care needs, offer a range of treatments and provide ongoing support for patients and their families. Specific services may include home detoxification programmes as an alternative to hospital admission, treatment for mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, a counseling and support for under 18’s and a parental support service for families with children who have drug and alcohol problems.

Community addiction teams work closely with GPs involved in the methadone programme to help move patients out of the programme and onto the next stage of their rehabilitation.
